I'm originally from India but was born & raised in Taiwan. I went to an American school there - I can speak, read, & write a little bit of Chinese & Tamil, but first language is English. I'm living in NJ now - no kids (yet) - but I do have a three-year-old Chow/Cocker mix & a wonderful husband. Love the entertainment industry - music, movies, and all that jazz.

Jobs & Such

Every now and again I have to wonder if I didn’t pursue the wrong field in terms of career. I have such a fascination with the entertainment industry, and there are certain aspects of it (not just the celebrity part) that I find so intriguing and interesting. It gets me thinking as to whether I’m seriously doing what’s right for me professionally. My knowledge of music and film isn’t that extensive, by far, but there are certain inner workings, certain behind-the-scenes aspects of it that I find to be so gripping.

There was sort of docu-video thing online that I stumbled upon – it showed Rob Thomas (lead singer of matchbox twenty) in the studio, laying down the lead vocals for “This Is How A Heart Breaks”, a track off his new CD “…Something to Be”. And it’s just so interesting to see what goes into making a song. And how it’s not as easy as listening to it might make it seem. He sings a few lines, his producer interrupts him, says “it was a little pitchy that time, let’s make it more solid” or “let’s try it again with a little anger”. Or Rob himself interrupts to say “Let me try this with the notes going down” and then after doing so, decides, “I’m going to do it up again, I think I liked that better.” I mean, there’s so much detail that you have to pay attention to. It’s surprisingly riveting. I’m not sure if that, per se is what I’d like to be doing, but Lord knows it would be nice to be able to work in an industry where you were able to create pieces of art like that. With musicians like that.

I guess it would depend on who you worked with though. I mean, I’d have to enjoy the music and respect the musician – Rob is one of those folks where I truly think he’s got talent, not just to sing but as a true artist – songwriter, musician, lyricist, etc.

I think I’m digressing from the point at hand though. Which is basically that it would be pretty cool to do something like that. Then again, that’s not really where my skills (which are what, exactly?) are.

It goes back to that whole earlier entry of “Ambition”. I know what I like, but my skills don’t seem to tie in. I’m good at a number of things, but that’s just it. I’m not REALLY good at one thing or another. I’m just GOOD at MANY things. So that just makes it really hard to narrow down. I like to write, but I’m not a really good writer. I like watching folks put art (music, songs, etc.) together, but I’m not good at that, either. I like photographs, etc. but am not good at taking pictures. So where does that leave me?

Evidently it leaves me with an MBA in Human Resources working as an admin in the Advertising and Sales department of a large media company.

Woo. Hoo.
